Copper Flower with Leaves

Copper Flower with Leaves

I'm still playing / experimenting with copper sheet. It's a new medium for me and still intimidating.

Having succeed at creating leaves, I decided on making flowers.

I drew 2 simple flower shapes on the copper sheet - one slightly smaller, drew petals on them with a pen then cut the flower shapes out.

On the back of each piece, I rubbed between the lines of the petals with the point of a pencil to make them puff out and to work harden the metal.

I then filed all around the shapes to round and smooth them and punched a hole in the centers with a hole puncher.

The texture on the petals was created by playing with roundnose pliers and a small nylon jaw plier to curve the edges of the petals.

I made an eyepin with a double loop out of 4" piece of 20 gauge wire. Placing the smaller flower on top, I inserted it through the hole in the center of both flowers.

On the back of the flowers, I coiled a fine wire around the base of the flower where the 20 gauge wire emerges tight up against the flower to secure it.

To create a bail with a loop for hanging leaves, I used the 20 gauge wire sticking out of the back of the flower. I made a simple figure eight and turned the bottom loop on its side to make it lie flat.

That's it for the flower. The leaves were covered earlier in my Copper Leaf Earrings.

I placed the pendant on a Sterling Silver collar here for contrast.

Gorgeous next step

Stunning, Zoraida! I love the flower petals, and how the whole leaf-and-flower pendant has a "frozen in time" feel.

A beautiful follow-up piece to your copper leaf earrings - your copper sheet work is flowing with so much creativity.

this is amazing. It must have been a lot of work and the pay off was well worth it. What a beautiful piece!

Gauge of copper
by: Lisa Kewish

Beautiful!
What gauge of copper sheet are you working with?

Thank you
by: Zoraida

Thank you for the compliments.

Lisa, I used 36 gauge copper sheet which is considered foil. I'll soon be brave enough to try 30 gauge as well as brass. I prefer to cut with shears - I'm a little intimidated by a saw. Although 36 gauge is thin, it work hardens enough to hold a shape.

I think the design is beautiful!
I have worked with the foil before as artwork but not for jewelry. What do you do about the sharp edges?

Thank you Kathi

Thank you Kathi,

The sharp edges are easily filed smooth with small jewelry files. The sheet work hardens enough to be held firmly with the finger tips while filing. The edges turn out quite smooth.

Simply Gorgeous!

COPPER FOIL

I work with copper sheets usually 24 gauge but have never done anything as exciting as your piece. I am anxious to foil. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.

Your work is just beautiful, I don't think you should feel intimidated any more. You have me thinking about trying that now too. All the best. Ingrid

Great flowers and leaves
by: nhchristie

Hi! Like everyone else, I am truly wowed by the beauty and realism of your copper leaves, and seeing your flower, I am intrigued by how well your method could be applied to forming daffodils in all their varied types. Thanks for being so generous with your artwork and instructions.

Thank you

Thank you handstrung.com, Ingrid and nhchristie for your great comments.

I do think daffodils would be perfect to render in copper foil. Perhaps you would post some photos if you make them?
