Copper Hardware Store Bangle Bracelet

Copper Bangle

Copper Bangle

This is my first attempt at a copper bangle bracelet - original design and directions by Christine Brandel in Step by Step Wire Jewelry magazine. Using quarter inch copper tubing and 18 gauge copper wire, available at the hardware store.

I however rummaged around in the garage and found some bent, dirty tubing left over from hooking up the water to the ice maker in our frig.

Using my hammer and bench block, I pounded the tubing flat.

Since I don't have a bracelet mandrel, I returned to said garage and started looking around for a substitute. When my husband asked what I was doing (in his tool boxes), he kindly suggested his old hickory baseball bat might do the trick. It was perfect!

Since the copper was work hardened from the pounding, I did have some work to do to shape it properly. It was fun to 'free hand' the wire wrapping around the bracelet form. Lastly, I oxidized the piece and burnished the top with steel wool.

This is not a piece I'd sell, but I do love the patina and the design. Also, need to work on cleaning up the ends.

FYI- I did buy a new piece of copper tubing at the hardware store - just 79 cents a foot!

Great Looking Bracelet
by: zoraida

Your bracelet turned out great!

I remember the article in the magazine and thought it'd make a good project.

I love hearing about how you obtained the copper. It's something I often do. It's very satisfying creating something beautiful from discarded, found materials.

Very nice

You did a great job with using a copper pipe and hammering it down into a bracelet. I think this is pretty ingenious. You did a great job on this and thanks for the story behind it. Very creative.

Why wouldn't you sell it?
by: Paige

It's beautiful! You really should consider selling those! I love it!

Thanks for the comments
by: Lynda

Paige- I'll definitely consider making more copper bangles to sell, just not this first one. Need to work on smoothing out the ends of the pipe that are turned under. I learned a lot making this
'prototype'. Thank you for the encouraging words.

Love it!!!

copper tubing
by: the jewelry lady

Hello, i love your bracelet. i bought a roll of copper tubing to cut into small curved pieces for a bracelet. never thought about pounding it flat. will try that today. copper is my favorite metal to work with. thanks for sharing your great idea.

Fortunate
by: Lynda Carson

If you are the fortunate owner of a roll of tubing, what a wonderful treasure to play with. If you are interested in more possibilities, you might check out the post on this site, "Collaboration Necklace". Look under the Necklace Gallery. Just by cutting even smaller pieces of tubing, slipping in a piece of wire before flattening, you can make beautiful beads and connectors.

Have fun and share in the gallery what you've made please!
