Ghanaian Ground Glass Beads

Ghanaian Ground Glass Beads

We arrived home to many family hugs and kisses late Saturday afternoon, after almost 40 hours of traveling from Kasei, Ghana. Our 17 days with the villagers was precious and meaningful…praying, singing songs of thanksgiving, working with students and teachers, listening to stories of their lives and hopes. We are already making plans for next year’s return trip.

I had about 40 minutes to shop for souvenirs at a small craft market on the way to the airport in Accra and found one shop with a good selection of the ground glass beads that Ghana is famous for. I’d been hoping to have some time to find these and had almost given up. And there they were.

I am delighted with this stash of gorgeousness and thoughts are spinning about design ideas. They will probably involve leather. My hope is to sell the jewelry as a fundraiser for the primary school in Kasei to help purchase needed text books and paper. The government gives each grade level 10 math textbooks for about 60 students. No money is supplied for paper or pencils.

How thoughtful of you

I am sure that whatever you decide as far as design will be great. You are so kind for giving back and thinking of the many others that will benefit from your lovely work.

What a great last-minute find! I agree, I think these beads would be very much "at home" on leather.

I love your idea for using locally-made beads for a fundraiser for the school there. Please let me know when you have your fundraiser jewelry ready from these - I'd love to purchase one!

I'm glad your trip went so well - it was great to hear about it.

Just getting started

Thanks for the comments. I've just posted a few of my beginning designs. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the colors and options, but having fun playing around.

Rena, I'd be honored. Let me know when you see something you like.
