Heart Tagua brown

by Lady Ortiz
(Nottingham, UK)

This designed is from vegetable ivory (tagua), the nuts fall to the ground when they are mature, and thus harvesting does not damage the trees. After harvesting and drying the nuts are ready for carving. The grain is close and very hard, resembling the finest ivory. Artisans carve each nut individually into the desired form. Respect for the environment and their culture combine as they create this unique piece from renewable resources. Market demand for tagua products generates income for craftspeople and encourages forest preservation while creating an alternative to illegal harvesting of elephant ivory.

Phytelephas is a genus containing six species of palms ( family Arecaceae), occurring from Southern Panama along the Andes to Bolivia. They are commonly know as ivory palms, ivory-nuts palms or tagua palms: Their scientific name means "plant-elephant". Give trade restrictions in elephant ivory as well as animal welfare concerns, ivory palm endosperm is often use a substitute for elephant ivory today, and traded as vegetable ivory, corozo or tagua. When dried out, it can be carved just like elephant ivory; it is often used for beads, buttons and jewelry, and can be dyed. Vegetable ivory furthers important environmental and socioeconomic goals by stimulating the local economies and micro-enterprises in South America, provides an alternative to cutting down rainforest for farming.

Each tagua plat produces up to 15 fruits which have a hard shell. In turn, each fruit carries within approximately 30 seeds to reach a size a 10cm, after harvesting, the seeds are dried for three months, during which the nut becomes hard and white. The seeds can be dyeing, polishing, carving and cutting based on use is given.

Our accessories in tagua have many styles, different colors and forms, is conformable to wear day or night and at any time on the year.

This is so different and great. I am not a huge ring person but will make an exception for this one. The carving and colors are awesome.
