As a modern society, we tend to deny it, but many of us practice superstitions and carry lucky charms, even in these contemporary times.

Think about it, weddings, births, graduations, turning 21, and deaths ... ALL involve ritualistic ceremonies, even in this high-tech modern world.

Superstitions and rituals are everywhere:

Gang members paint secret graffiti symbols on walls, to claim their territory.

Young adults (and old folks) tattoo secret designs on their body parts.

Astrological readings are very popular.

Fraternal societies STILL conduct secret initiations.

Esprit Mystique jewelry evolved after years of traveling, studying Petroglyphs, Pre-Columbian art, African textiles, Mayan art history, and finally writing a thesis ("The Symbolic Significance of Leather Amulet Messages Hidden on the Bambara Hunters Shirt" - try saying that 3 times in a row!).

And because of all that, a passion for creating contemporary personal fetishes was born.

Here are more of the spirit charms and personal amulets we've created:

One of my superstitions
by: Rena

...is that I'll make more sales at a show if I wait until the show is over to add up my earnings!

This superstition is based on a trend I've experienced - that somehow adding up my total sales during a break seems to change the flow of things at a show.

It may be just coincidence - but I always wait till after the show to total up my earnings, just in case! :o)

Amulets
by: Joan

Uh oh - I have a show this weekend - just to be on the safe side I'll hold off counting too soon! The amulets are beautiful - I do love anything that has a sense of history.

No Superstitions Here
by: Patricia

I am a rarity in that I have absolutely no superstitions. Nope, none at all. I do, however, appreciate the beauty of many of the works of art that ritual has inspired.

As for adding up earnings before the end of a show... Who even has the time?

:)

Adding up the sales
by: Debra

I, too, have found that I make more money if I don't add up my sales until the show is over.

I also keep a large piece of citrine (the money-attracting gemstone) in my cash box.
