Gold-plated aspen leaves need only a delicate gold chain to become a perfectly finished piece of jewelry:

Coins with a hole in the middle are excellent jewelry components. This necklace couldn't be simpler - a coin on a small chain, with no other ornamentation. The round coin is a nice contrast to the square-shaped links:

Sometimes a focal bead / pendant makes a much more powerful impact all by itself, suspended from a chain. This big, smooth amber drop is interesting and visually busy enough that hanging it from a strand of beads would have really reduced its impact:
