Question about jewelry findings

by Theresa S.
(Texas)

I would appreciate some insight on jewelry findings. I cannot afford gold or silver findings at this time, and my question is-what is the next best quality in jewelry findings??

I have made some jewelry with cheaper findings and after they turned another color, I have to take them all apart. I do not want to sell jewelry to people if the findings are going to turn colors. Thanks!

Theresa S.

antiqued silver plate or the surgical steel
by: pat barden

i only use sterling silver--but ive noticed the antiqued silver plate--at least iffing the plate wears off--its still the same color, right? withe bright silver plate--when that wears off--its noticable, eh?
or what of the surgical steel? that wont turn colors

Steel and Varnish
by: Ana

I would suggest steel and sometimes you can just varnish pieces that are not gold or silver so they don't loose their color.

Quality base metal findings
by: Lynda Carson

I've found that Tierra Cast has high quality jewelry findings in various base metal finishes. Their silver findings however are all with mostly 'oxidized' engraved look pieces.

While weather the high cost of sterling prices, I've been using a heavy silver plated artisan wire for the earring, especially large pieces...with a sterling silver ear wire, in order to keep the cost down for customers.

Great Findings
by: Dianne Culbertson

I love Accessories Susan for base findings. I have never had any of them turn, they are lead and nickle free and available in copper, silver and gold colors all of which have been oxidized.

Sterling over copper
by: Ecobeadstagua

I have been using sterling over copper for two years.

It oxidizes well and so far, it is holding the silver well. I've been using earwires, fancy headpins, wire and beads. It certainly helps my price point and the customers have come back for more.

Two suppliers that have it are ANDS Silver (very high quality,) and Sweetcreek fro Florence, Oregon.

Be sure your tags reflect the materials you use.

buttons
by: wadham97

I love using antique and vintage buttons for clasps. I have a large stash of them, and I always seem to find just the right thing to match a project. I just make a loop with matching seed beads to slip over the button. Very comfortable, and customers seem to love them!

Make your own findings
by: Dorothy Hubbard

I understand the price of gold and silver is up, how about making your findings, especially earring hooks and toggles. You probably could get 6 pairs of eartings hooks out of one foot of wire and two toggles out of one foot of wire. I also understand after putting alot of work in one of the jewelry piece and have to step down on the findings, so look into making your own findings it will make the piece extra special.

Using Sterling Silver Findings
by: Anonymous

I've use the Sterling silver finding in a lot of my
Jewery, and I've had to redo all of the peace
That I've use sterling on because they tarnish
So badly. So I now uses the cheaper brand
Findings and I have no discoloration.
