Under the Sea Pendant

Starfish and turtle grace an undersea-inspired pendant

Starfish and turtle grace an undersea-inspired pendant

I am very lucky to work as a diving instructor in the Cayman Islands, having been a diver for many years now. Even now years on I can still see something new I've never seen before every week.

The best thing about diving is the texture - everything is patterned or textured in some way. From the colourful fish scales to the tiny sponge and coral patterns. Everything is beautiful.

I am new to metal clay, about 3 months and am restricted in what and how much I can make by the price of the materials!

Under the sea themes and patterns are my favourite and I like to use a lot of beaded work in aquas, turquoise and sea greens.

This is a pendant I made recently from metal clay, using tiny pieces of dichroic glass. I made a turtle and starfish and while I appreciate that it's not to everyone's taste, it has gotten many comments from the other divers and sea-lovers on Cayman.

I made a similar pendant for a diver friend who was mad about sea horses and she had a seahorse instead of the turtle.

I have a recent Etsy shop and it gets lots of views - I advertise on Facebook and other websites from time to time, but sales are not exactly brisk.

So if anyone these has some time to spare I would appreciate a critique of the store any suggestions from all you experts out there.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.

Sea-themed jewelry
by: Rena

Hi Deby, I love your work! I think you've got a great jewelry niche here.

For making more sales I think you just need to focus on getting your jewelry in front of more people who love beaches, islands, diving, snorkeling, the sea, sailing, nature, wildlife, etc.

Research where those folks can be found online and offline, and put your marketing and promotion efforts into those channels. Work toward networking and making more contacts with people in those areas.

Also, since you're teaching diving in the Cayman Islands, you probably already know a ton of people who would either be happy customers of your undersea-themed jewelry, or who could connect you to people they know.

And I imagine that after taking diving lessons from you, many of your students would be thrilled to purchase a piece of your sea-themed jewelry as a lovely memento of their lessons with you, and the amazing things they saw underwater!

Gorgeous!

Lovely work, Deby! I just looked at your Etsy site and the overall effect is beautiful and very classy. I think Rena's ideas for reaching an audience are right on. I also think you should keep doing what you're doing and be confident that sales will pick up in time. It took me a couple of years of "hangin' in" for my online shop to become successful and it's been well worth the wait. You have a wonderful, original look, especially appealing because of the connection with your diving, and I wish you all the best! Judith
